Exploring the Human Side of Data at SRTL-14

Members of the DataScEd4CiEn project recently presented their research at the Fourteenth International Forum for Research on Statistical Reasoning, Thinking and Literacy (SRTL-14), held in State College, Pennsylvania, USA from June 26 to July 2. Themed “Engaging with complex data: Navigating subjectivities and perspectives”, the forum provided a fitting platform to share findings from our Erasmus+ project.

Drawing on Toulmin’s model of argumentation, our presentation explored how students and teachers engaged with the human elements of data—personal viewpoints, ethical concerns, and contextual understanding—within data science education. We highlighted STEAM learning scenarios developed in Spain and Cyprus, tackling pressing issues such as drought and fast fashion.

Our findings affirm that subjectivity is not a distraction from statistical thinking, but a vital component of critical, reflective data literacy in an increasingly complex and data-rich world.
