As a teacher of 10-year-olds, I already do some simple data collection with my class, like tracking rainfall in our school garden. Using sensors would really expand what we could explore — for example, collecting noise data could help us talk about noise pollution and how it affects different communities. Climate change is something the children are already very interested in, especially through our Green Schools initiative. I’ve just read the book Orbital and was telling the class how the planet is one big, connected ecosystem — what we do in one place can affect people in another. This really helped them understand that even though we get lots of rain in Ireland, other countries are experiencing drought and wildfires, and that this is all linked. Making these kinds of connections between our local data and global issues could be a powerful way to help children understand fairness, responsibility, and the impact of their actions.
