Throughout this module, I have learned how STEAM education focused on data can be a powerful tool for promoting civic engagement among students. As a Physical Education teacher, I initially didn’t see a clear connection between my area and data science, but now I realize how data can be integrated to promote health and well-being. For example, students can use measuring devices like activity trackers to record their step count, calories burned, or heart rate during lessons, and then analyze this data to learn about the importance of exercise in public health. I could also integrate the analysis of environmental data, such as temperature and air quality, when we do outdoor activities, discussing how these factors affect physical performance and health. Additionally, by analyzing their own sports performance with charts and tables, students could reflect on how to improve their performance, linking data science with mathematics and sports science. These activities have made me reflect on the challenges of integrating data science into my classes, especially teaching students how to collect and analyze data meaningfully. I am excited to explore more how these approaches can help students understand the connection between physical activity, health, and social issues such as climate change or social justice, and how individual decisions impact public health.
