I chose to analyze the “Economy” scenario (Ages 9-12) because it addresses the Gender Pay Gap, a critical social justice issue that aligns well with my background in Philology and Special Education. This scenario uses a STEAM approach to show students that the 22% wage disparity is not just a number, but a result of various social factors like education and worker type. By integrating Mathematics with Social Studies, the lesson helps students understand the systemic causes of inequality through real-world data.

The use of CODAP is a key part of this scenario, as it allows students to perform “Data Moves” like filtering and grouping to visualize complex information. This technology helps students move beyond passive learning to active citizenship, as they interpret data to propose solutions for a more equitable society. In my classroom, I would use these visual tools to help students develop critical thinking and global competencies, ensuring that even those with learning difficulties can engage with these important social topics.
