We are proud to share that Dr Maria Meletiou-Mavrotheris represented the DataScEd4CiEn project at the 6th Annual Conference of the Cyprus Statistical Society, contributing to a high-level session on statistical literacy in today’s data-driven world.

📅 Date: 30 May 2025
📍 Location: UCLan Cyprus & Online (Hybrid)

A Collaborative International Session

The session, titled “Advancing Statistical Literacy in the Era of Data-Driven Decision-Making”, brought together leading experts from major statistical organisations, including the Royal Statistical Society, the Luxembourg Statistical Society, and the Cyprus Statistical Society.

Together, the speakers explored how statistical and data literacy can be strengthened across education, research, and society.

Educating for Data Citizenship

In her presentation, “Educating for Data Citizenship in the AI Era: Insights from Two EU-Funded Projects”, Dr Meletiou-Mavrotheris highlighted the importance of equipping all learners—not only future data scientists—with essential data literacy skills.

Drawing on the DataScEd4CiEn and DataSETUP projects , she emphasized:

  • The growing role of data and artificial intelligence in shaping modern society
  • The need for early integration of data science education in STEAM
  • The importance of fostering critical, informed, and responsible citizens

Her presentation showcased how project initiatives support teachers and students in engaging with real-world data, addressing societal challenges such as climate change, health, and social inequality.

Key Messages from the Presentation

The talk highlighted several key insights:

  • Data science is an interdisciplinary field, combining statistics, computer science, and domain knowledge
  • Understanding data is essential for informed decision-making and democratic participation
  • Education systems must adapt to prepare learners for a data-rich and AI-driven world
  • Teachers play a central role in fostering data literacy and ethical awareness

Examples from project activities demonstrated how hands-on, inquiry-based learning can support both technical understanding and critical thinking.

A Valuable Exchange of Ideas

The session concluded with a roundtable discussion, encouraging dialogue across sectors and reinforcing the importance of collaboration in promoting statistical literacy.

Dr Meletiou-Mavrotheris expressed her appreciation for the opportunity to contribute to such an inspiring exchange, alongside distinguished speakers from across Europe.

Moving Forward

Participation in this international conference highlights the project’s ongoing commitment to advancing data science education, statistical literacy, and civic engagement.

As data continues to shape our world, initiatives like DataScEd4CiEn play a key role in ensuring that future generations are equipped to think critically, act responsibly, and engage meaningfully with data.
