Newsletter 4: Empowering Educators through Professional Development

We are pleased to share the release of the fourth edition of the DataScEd4CiEn newsletter, dedicated to one of the project’s key pillars: Professional Development for educators across Europe.

This issue highlights the successful implementation of a three-session training programme designed to support teachers in integrating data science into STEAM education, with a strong focus on civic engagement and social justice.

A Journey from Foundations to Classroom Practice

The Professional Development programme brought together educators in a structured learning journey:

  • Session 1 (2 February 2026): Focused on foundational concepts, including the DataScEd4CiEn framework and pedagogical approaches such as Design Thinking
  • Session 2 (9 February 2026): Introduced practical tools for data exploration and addressed key topics in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning
  • Session 3 (5 March 2026): Showcased real classroom implementations and STEAM scenarios developed across partner schools

As illustrated throughout the newsletter (pages 1–3), participants moved from theory to hands-on application, gaining both conceptual understanding and practical teaching strategies.

Key Highlights

  • Educators explored tools such as CODAP to analyse and visualise real-world data
  • Discussions on AI and Machine Learning addressed both opportunities and ethical challenges in education
  • Classroom scenarios demonstrated how data science can be used to engage students with real societal issues, including sustainability, migration, and equality
  • Emphasis was placed on data practices, including problem formulation, analysis, and communication of results

Impact on Teaching and Learning

The Professional Development programme strengthened educators’ ability to:

  • Integrate data science meaningfully into STEAM subjects
  • Promote critical thinking and data literacy
  • Engage students with authentic, socially relevant challenges

As highlighted in the final section of the newsletter, these efforts contribute to the development of future-ready learners and responsible citizens, capable of navigating an increasingly data-driven world.
